The Zia Sun Symbol is most commonly recognized as a symbol for New Mexico, but originated with the ancient Native Americans of the Zia Pueblo. The Zia represents the basic harmony of the universe, with four points radiating from a circle of life and love, without beginning or end. The tribe believed that four is a sacred number. This number can be seen in the Earth with four cardinal directions and the four seasons, and in the day, with sunrise, noon, evening and night. Our lives are divided by the four stages of childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age. It was also believed that man has four sacred obligations which are to develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of his people.
